Alumni announced as Archibald Prize Finalist
Alumni announced as Archibald Prize Finalist
Ravenswood Alumni Whitney Duan (2012) has been announced as a Finalist in the 2024 Archibald Prize.
Her Archibald Prize portrait Fluffy (Jordan Gogos) depicts Jordan Gogos, a multidisciplinary artist and Australian runway designer best known for his locally-made fashion label Iordanes Spyridon Gogos.
‘I am incredibly honoured to be recognised in the Archibald Prize this year, and deeply humbled by the process of getting here,’ said Whitney. ‘This is my first time entering an art prize and the journey to submission has been the most challenging endeavour I've ever undertaken.’
Whitney was an art student at Ravenswood and has continued her work through her Bachelor of Arts (Art History) course at the University of Sydney.
‘The Ravenswood Art Department was an early supporter of my creativity, providing access to various materials and resources that allowed me to explore different avenues of art practice, cultivating my interest and honing my skills,’ said Whitney. ‘It was my art teacher Ms. Edwina Palmer’s passion for modern and contemporary Australian art, especially that made by women, that empowered my peers and me to think beyond the materiality of art. She empowered us to interact with our world as global citizens, philosophers and custodians.’
Ravenswood Visual Arts teacher Mr Tim Owers (standing next to Whitney in the image) has also been announced as a finalist in the 2024 Archibald Prize for his portrait On the bench and on the cusp (portrait of Cortnee Vine) which captures Cortnee Vine who is a member of the Matildas Australian Women’s football team and Sydney FC team.
The 2024 Archibald Prize finalists can be viewed at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until 8 September 2024.

Eloise Sohier (2012) special guest at International Women's Day Assembly
During the special International Women’s Day Assembly, students were delighted to welcome Ravenswood Alumni, Eloise Sohier (Class of 2012), as a guest speaker.
Eloise recounted her journey from a Ravenswood student to a prominent Fox Sports television presenter, captivating students and staff. Reflecting on her transformative years at Ravenswood, she encouraged students to seize every opportunity. Eloise said, ‘What empowered me at Ravenswood was the ability to embrace my uniqueness, my own voice, and to take it from inside the school gates out into the world. I was nurtured by some amazing teachers, and I have incredible memories of them being mother figures to us. It’s the relationships we have built here that allowed me to be shown the path of what it is to be a woman.’
In collaboration with Federal Member for Bradfield, the Hon. Paul Fletcher, Ravenswood also hosted a special event with Australia’s longest-serving female Senator and former Defence and Foreign Affairs Minister, the Hon. Marise Payne. Schools from the Bradfield electorate were invited, with 70 students from nine schools attending and enjoying breakfast before participating in a highly engaging address from Ms Payne.
On International Women’s Day, Ravenswood buzzed with a flurry of vibrant activities and discussions, all centred on empowerment and inclusivity. From fundraising Social Justice initiatives for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter to uplifting mentor ‘Inclusion Circles’ and ‘Primer Statement Photo Booth’ activities, the Senior School united in the celebration of women’s achievements and contributions to society. Junior School and Prep students engaged in activities centred around women who inspire them—highlighting to them the significant role of female figures, including their own mothers.

As part of Ravenswood’s Career Week, Mrs Elise McDonald (Tertiary Education and Careers Adviser) led a practical and insightful session for Senior School students and their parents. The ‘Coffee and Croissants’ session included guidance on preparing a CV, interview skills, and attributes and skills employers may look for. The session was supported by Ravenswood Alumni President Lisa Boyce (Clancy, 1990) who shared her perspective from interviewing and recruiting candidates and leading teams over the last couple of decades. Lisa also encouraged students to leverage their Ravenswood Alumni network.

Further to our previous communications the Ravenswood Old Girls’ Union (also known as Ravenswood Alumni) held a Special General Meeting (SGM) in May. Thank you to Alumni who voted and attended the SGM and to the Ravenswood Alumni Committee and all Alumni community members for their ongoing dedication to and support of our incredible school.
